Few stories are better suited to the visual excess of the Fabulous Fox than The Great Gatsby. The Broadway musical arrives during the holiday season with the familiar world of champagne, 1920s fashion, enormous parties and a man determined to recreate a past that no amount of money can truly recover.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, the production surrounds Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan and narrator Nick Carraway with a contemporary Broadway score and large-scale staging. The spectacle is an obvious attraction, particularly inside a theater as ornate as the Fox itself.

But Gatsby only works when the glitter eventually begins to feel hollow. Behind the clothes, cars and wealth is a story about obsession and reinvention—about one man attempting to manufacture a future by reconstructing a version of the past that never existed quite the way he remembers it.
