The Black Rep Opens Its 50th Season With the Soul and Strength of The Color Purple
Alice Walker’s enduring story returns to St. Louis in a landmark musical powered by gospel, blues, jazz and a journey toward self-possession.
For its 50th anniversary season, The St. Louis Black Repertory Company begins with a musical whose themes fit naturally within the institution’s history: The Color Purple. Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the musical follows Celie from a childhood defined by abuse and powerlessness toward independence, community and an understanding of her own worth.
The score draws from gospel, blues and jazz, allowing music to function as more than decoration. It becomes part of Celie’s emotional journey and gives the show its combination of pain, resilience and celebration. The Black Rep’s long commitment to Black theatrical storytelling makes this more than another regional staging of a familiar Broadway title.
The St. Louis production also brings together performers with strong ties to the company and the city. That local connection should give the material an additional layer as The Black Rep marks five decades of creating opportunities for Black performers, directors, designers and audiences.
