The Color Purple Musical Live at St. Louis’ The Black Rep

Dates September 9–27, 2026
Venue Edison Theatre at Washington University
Presented By The Black Rep

For its 50th anniversary season, The St. Louis Black Repertory Company begins with a musical whose themes fit naturally within the institution’s history: The Color Purple. Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the musical follows Celie from a childhood defined by abuse and powerlessness toward independence, community and an understanding of her own worth.

The score draws from gospel, blues and jazz, allowing music to function as more than decoration. It becomes part of Celie’s emotional journey and gives the show its combination of pain, resilience and celebration. The Black Rep’s long commitment to Black theatrical storytelling makes this more than another regional staging of a familiar Broadway title.

The St. Louis production also brings together performers with strong ties to the company and the city. That local connection should give the material an additional layer as The Black Rep marks five decades of creating opportunities for Black performers, directors, designers and audiences.

WAVKLB Take

The music may bring audiences through the door, but Celie’s evolution from survival to self-possession is what has kept The Color Purple relevant. As an opening statement for The Black Rep’s golden anniversary, the choice feels particularly appropriate.
