The Largest Book Party returns in September with two St. Louis-area gatherings built around a simple but powerful idea: put new books directly into the hands of children and give them something they can call their own.
A good book can introduce a child to another world. Books for STL Kids wants to make sure more St. Louis children have the opportunity to take those worlds home with them.
This September, the volunteer-run literacy organization brings back The Largest Book Party in St. Louis, its signature community book-distribution event. Rather than staging the celebration in only one part of the region, Books for STL Kids is again planning two gatherings — one in Florissant and another in downtown St. Louis.
The format is intentionally centered on the children. Young guests can spend the morning listening to stories, enjoying snacks and, most importantly, choosing brand-new books that they can take home and keep. Invitations for the 2026 events have already been distributed by the organization.
Two Book Parties, One Mission
The Largest Book Party: Florissant
Books for STL Kids will bring The Largest Book Party to the James J. Eagan Center in Florissant this September. Children attending the event will take part in a morning centered on storytelling, books and the excitement of selecting new titles for themselves.
The Largest Book Party: Downtown
The celebration will also return to Busch Stadium, bringing the organization’s literacy mission into one of St. Louis’ most recognizable gathering places. Like the Florissant event, the downtown Book Party will give invited children an opportunity to enjoy story time, snacks and new books they can bring home.
Why Owning the Book Matters
The distinction between borrowing a book and owning one is central to the work of Books for STL Kids.
The organization says its mission is to increase access to new books for children from under-resourced families while inspiring a lasting love of reading. Books for STL Kids distributes only brand-new books, and the books are intended to leave with the children rather than remain on a classroom or institutional shelf.
That philosophy turns literacy into something personal. A book placed in a child’s hands can be read tonight, revisited months later, shared with a sibling and eventually become the beginning of a home library.
Books for STL Kids reports that it has distributed more than 250,000 new books to children throughout the greater St. Louis area. The organization reaches young readers both through direct community events such as The Largest Book Party and through grants provided to qualifying organizations serving children from low-income families.

Books for STL Kids operates with a straightforward goal: expand children’s literacy through book ownership. Organizations receiving book grants select titles suited to the children they serve, while books distributed at community events are placed directly into the hands of young readers.
