The Multiverse Heads for Collision in Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel’s biggest ensemble in years brings Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four heroes and X-Men veterans into the orbit of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Synopsis
Marvel’s official synopsis says heroes from three distinct universes are placed on a deadly collision course and forced to confront an existential threat unlike anything they have faced before. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU in a new role as Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom, while the announced cast draws together Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wakandan heroes and legacy X-Men characters.
What to Expect
Marvel has spent years turning the Multiverse Saga into a collection of separate doors. Avengers: Doomsday looks designed to kick many of them open at once. Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct, with Stephen McFeely writing, and the cast list alone reads like a map of several generations of Marvel filmmaking.
Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the Fantastic Four, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Winston Duke’s M’Baku and characters associated with the X-Men all appear in the announced ensemble. At the center is Downey—not as Tony Stark, but as Doctor Doom. That casting gives the movie a built-in tension that goes beyond the usual question of whether the heroes can defeat the villain.
The challenge will be scale. Endgame worked because the spectacle ultimately served relationships audiences had followed for years. Doomsday is attempting something different: making collisions between universes emotionally legible while setting up the final stretch of the Multiverse Saga. The official trailer suggests Marvel is treating the event less like another team-up and more like an approaching catastrophe.
WAVKLB TAKE
The cast is enormous, but Doctor Doom is the real pressure point. Marvel is asking audiences to look at the face most associated with its greatest hero and accept him as a new kind of threat.

Cast in Focus
The scale of Avengers: Doomsday is part of the attraction, but several returning performers carry especially important franchise history into the film.
Anthony Mackie ↗
Sam Wilson / Captain America
Mackie’s major film roles stretch from The Hurt Locker and 8 Mile to years of MCU appearances as Sam Wilson. After stepping fully into the shield in Captain America: Brave New World, Doomsday becomes his biggest theatrical test yet as Captain America inside a full-scale Avengers event.
Letitia Wright ↗
Shuri / Black Panther
Wright became an international star as Shuri in Black Panther and carried far greater dramatic responsibility in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She has also appeared in Death on the Nile and Ready Player One. Her return in Doomsday places Wakanda’s current Black Panther inside Marvel’s largest crossover since Endgame.
Winston Duke ↗
M’Baku
Duke made an immediate impression as M’Baku in Black Panther before showing a very different side in Jordan Peele’s Us. He has since appeared in films including Spenser Confidential and The Fall Guy. Doomsday returns him to the Wakandan role that introduced him to worldwide audiences, now on a much larger multiversal stage.
Robert Downey Jr.
Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom
Downey’s career already includes Iron Man, Avengers: Endgame, Sherlock Holmes, Tropic Thunder and his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer. That history is exactly why this casting matters: Doomsday asks the actor most closely identified with Tony Stark to re-enter Marvel not as its defining hero, but as Doctor Doom.
